A journey through the Fathers of the Church

A journey through the Fathers of the Church

Antonio de la torre

The importance of the root in a healthy and leafy tree is analogous to the importance of the Fathers in the history and life of the tree that is the Church. This essential value is what has stimulated in us the project of making them known and spreading their teachings through this section: when we get to know them closely, we can assimilate precious contents for our Christian life.

The value of the Fathers has always been perceived in the life of the Church, which in the Second Vatican Council recalled how "it is strongly recommended that Catholics should have greater recourse to the spiritual riches of the Fathers" (Unitatis Redintegratio, 15).

Well, who are these Fathers? Or rather, Holy Fathers, as they have usually been called throughout the centuries. They are the saints who in the first centuries of Christianity engendered and formed the Church with the strength of their faith and the depth and richness of their written teachings.

We can contemplate them in the Church, therefore, as fathers, builders, witnesses and teachers. Let us now look at each of these perspectives so that we can understand the value that the Fathers have for us as a whole.
